Lab-Aids: Simple Machines (Station Approach) Kit
Students measure the force required to lift objects using different simple machines. Each successive activity introduces new, more complex concepts that build upon and extend student understanding of force and motion. They calculate work input, work output, and mechanical advantage and are introduced to friction, efficiency, and the second law of thermodynamics. This kit is designed for a "station approach" and contains only one set of materials. If you wish more than one group to work simultaneously on this concept you can purchase additional 214EL kits. Each 214EL kit contains the equipment for one more station/group but not the Teacher's Guide.
Scientific Concepts:
- Energy is a property of many substances and is transferred in many ways.
- Work done on an object is equal to the Force applied x Distance moved.
- Machines can decrease the force required (mechanical advantage) but can not decrease the amount of work needed to move an object.
